NW CC Champs

"IF YOU'RE GOOD ENOUGH YOU'RE OLD ENOUGH"

Teenager Iolo Hughes proved more than a match for his older rivals when he  won the senior men's race at the Grand Prix Express North Wales Cross-Country Championships at Northop.

The 18-year-old, who has proved he can mix it with the best in the League this season, opted for the longer race and thus became only the second athlete to win the senior event while still an under-20. The first to do so was Wrexham's outstanding Tony  Blackwell in 1978.

The women's title went for the first time to Wrexham's Gina Paletta, home temporarily from the United States, and she was followed by veterans Andrea Rowlands and Lynn Wright.

 * Welshpool's Welsh international Andrew Davies (Stockport) won the Northern championships in Pontecraft, finishing six seconds clear of Olympic triathlete Alistair Brownlee. In fifth place was former Bangor student Nick Swinburn, with current student Callum Rowlinson (Sale) 97th and Davies' brother-in-law Jamie Loxham (Stockport)  108th.

In the Midlands championships Alison Lavender (Oswestry), the reigning North Wales League champion, finished 4th and  former League champion Claire Martin sixth (1st L40).

Twin Piers 10k

OWEN POWERS TO PIERS WIN

Eryri's Gwyn Owen ran a well-judged race to win the Twin Piers 10k in Colwyn Bay, which was fortunately blessed with ideal conditions.

After 2k, at the end of Llandudno prom, the Eryri athlete lay third behind Robert White (Buxton) and Dean Longley (Prestatyn), who were shoulder-to-shoulder.

By the time they emerged from the  housing estate in Penrhyn Bay Owen had taken the lead, with Longley  clear of White, and that is how they stayed for the second half of the race, with Owen finishing particularly strongly.

Just nine seconds behind White in fourth place was Eryri's talented young teenager Owen Roberts.
The first woman home was veteran Debbie Holl (unattached), who finished third two years ago.
