Garn race

SMALL TURNOUT ON Y GARN

A busy calendar is believed to be the main reason for a disappointingly small turnout for the Garn race  and although it was wet underfoot conditions were generally very good.

The event (2.5m, 1,500ft) was dominated by veterans, with Lloyd Taggart leading all the way.

 Results: 1 L Taggart (Manx, M40) 27.39, 2 N Ashcroft (Ambleside, M40) 30.47, 3 P Jenkinson (Eryri, M40) 31.52, 4 N Craine (Eryri, M50) 33.10. Ladies: M Oliver (Eryri, L60) 47.23.

 Juniors (1m, 350ft): 1 K Richard (Eryri) 8.19, 2 G Wyn Jones (Eryri) 10.18, 3 H Lloyd (Warrington) 10.22.

Beddgelert - Snowdon race

CLUBMATES TIE IN SNOWDON RACE

Northumberland Fell Runners' Tom Cornthwaite and Josh Tighe shared the honours in the inaugural Beddgelert - Snowdon trail race after 11.3 miles of racing.

The two friends crossed the line together, just 15 seconds ahead of Aberystwyth's Welsh international Felipe Jones, winner of last week's Cader Idris race.

The event, a trial for the world long-distance trail championship, involved 4,068 feet of climbing, the final ascent on Snowdon being particularly gruelling.

English international Cornthwaite finished ninth in last year's Snowdon international race but this time the race finished on the summit.

 Results: 1 T Cornthwaite (Northumberland) 1-33.28, 2 J Tighe (Northumberland) 1-33.28, 3 F Jones (Aberystwyth) 1-33.43, 4 H Aggleton (MDC) 1-35.29, 5 K Gray (Calder V, M40) 1-36.21, 6 M Roberts (Eryri) 1-41.23. Cumbrian champs

HETHERINGTON PICKS UP TWO MEDALS

Former Wrexham and North Wales athlete Ruth Hetherington (now Border) picked up two medals in the Cumbrian track and field championships in Carlisle, but the competition was almost non-existent.

In the 800m she finished second in 2-30.1, but she ran alone in the 1,500m, crossing the line in 5-08.9.

ANOTHER PB FOR ROBERTS

Four days after winning the North Wales 5k title in Rhyl the 24-year-old set another pb of 72.19 while coming seventh overall in the Edinburgh Festival Half-Marathon.

Great Orme race

ORME GOATS WANDER OFF THE PATH

Local knowledge probably came in useful for runners in the Great Orme race, the latest in the Tuesday night Joe Brown Series.

Several competitors went astray and others, not realising, followed like sheep, so Mark Davies (NWRR) was able to claim his first victory in the series.
