THE TOUGHEST TEST

North Wales youngsters who have had an exceptional winter face their toughest test yet at the UK inter-counties' cross-country championships in Birmingham on March 8.

Siblings Iolo and Cari Hughes have already proved themselves at UK Cross-Challenge meetings but will do well to repeat their successes at an event which attracts the very best in all age-groups.

Village Bakery Half-Marathon

RUNNERS SENT ASTRAY - AGAIN

For the second time the Village Bakery Half-Marathon in Wrexham was marred by controversy when some runners were sent the wrong way.

Many competitors were also fuming that they were not told in advance that the course was well over the 13.1 miles, some GPS readings showing 13.7.

Flooding on parts of the course meant changes had to be made at fairly short notice and although runners were warned of the changes they were unaware that it extended the distance.

Two years ago a group of runners went astray when someone stole direction markers at a junction but this time a marshal, apparently unaware of the course changes, sent some the wrong way.

They soon realised their error and returned to join the field, but only after having put in an extra 1,000 metres or so.

Trafford's Tom Charles was unaffected and he went on to repeat his 2013 victory, with Maldwyn's Andrew Davies 25 seconds behind and taking the North Wales championship.

Anna Lupton (Barrow) was the first lady home, with the regional title going to Emma Crowe (Wrexham), who was among those angry at the slip-up.

Wrexham's Daniel Weston, who finished sixth overall, is to receive his first Welsh vest after being called up for the annual Celtic Plate 100k race following his recent performance in the Thames Trot 50-miler.

 Results of open race: 1 T Charles (Trafford) 69.47, 2 A Davies (Mald) 70.12, 3 T Elly (Salford) 72.26, 4 J Savage (Kent) 72.42, 5 M Shaw (Salford, M35) 72.53, 6 D Weston (Wrex) 74.12.

SIBLINGS CLAIM ANOTHER DOUBLE

Menai's Iolo and Cari Hughes produced more scintillating performances to win their races at the Welsh Cross-Country Championships in Dinefwr Park, Carmarthen.

With the exception of Wrexham's Christian Smith, who also claimed gold, and Lily Davis (Deeside) it was left to Menai to fly the flag for North Wales - and they did the region proud, coming close to securing other podium places.

Smith won the U15 class after a battle with Jake Heyward (Cardiff), while the Menai pair of Cai Linton-Davies and Oliver Barbaresi were fourth and seventh respectively. Joseph Crutchley (Maldwyn) was eighth.

Sion Jones (Menai) was the only North Walian in the under-13s' event and he came home a highly creditable ninth.

Two others who only narrowly missed out were Lily Davis, who was fourth under 17, and the much-improved Debbie Williams (Menai), who was also fourth in the senior women's race won by Swansea veteran Andrew Whitcombe.

Iolo, the North Wales under-20 champion, took the under-17 title and Cari claimed the most impressive victory of the day, winning the under-15s' race by a massive 75 seconds.

For the third successive year the senior men's race, which had no North Wales entrants, was won by the in-form GB international Dewi Griffiths (Swansea).

Nick Beer 10k

"AS YOU WERE" OVER THE WINDY ORME

There was a distinct sense of deja vu about this year's Nick Beer 10k at Llandudno, with the 2013 winners Rob Samuel and Siobhan Evans, both of Eryri Harriers, both retaining their titles.

It was a god day for the Gwynedd club, who had the first three men home, Gwyn Owen having rejoined them after a long spell unattached.

Though the rain kept off there was a strong headwind which slowed the runners as they approached the highest point on the course around the Great Orme.
