Comrades Ultra

SEAN WELSH "CHAMPION" IN COMRADES

Ultra specialist Sean McCormack of Abergele can lay claim to an unusual title - Welsh "Comrades" champion.

He and his son Steven were among 14,000 starters in the Comrades Ultra-Marathon in South Africa, the world's oldest and biggest ultra race.

This year the race followed the "up" course from Durban to Pietermaritzburg and was run in the hottest conditions for 20 years. That, together with a howling headwind in the second half of the race, meant that 4,000 were unable to finish before the strict 12-hour cut-off.

Sean, who also ran in the event last year, finished in a superb 8h 47m 58s in 1,317th position. He was 70th over 50. Steven, making his ultra debut, also had a brilliant run, clocking 10h 12m 01s for 3,609th place and 357th in his age category.

Nine entrants had declared themselves as Welsh and of those only seven started and five finished. Sean was the first "Welshman" home and Steven was second.
